World Book Day: The Best Audiobooks for Modern Readers

20.03.2020

It’s World Book Day and what’s better than a good book? Audiobooks of course, and we've got some recommendations to start you off.

Here at RHA we are more than ready to delve into the booming industry of audiobooks. More than ever, paperbacks are being left on the shelf as people turn to headphones for their daily literature fix. We recommend you bookmark these audiobooks:

Accompanying the Epic Journey Quest

The Lord of the Rings: Unabridged

Narrated by Phil Dragash

Going by the size of this tome, it’s no surprise American filmmaker and artist Phil Dragash took three years to complete the detailed epic of Frodo and his friends. The 48-hour playback time seems daunting, but with each scene embellished with unique character voicing and lush soundscapes from the cinematic masterpiece, you’ll find yourself immersed in Middle Earth.

The journey from The Shire to Mordor may be long (about 1350 miles), but we couldn’t be happier spending it with Phil Dragash.

The Conversation Starter

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup

Narrated by Will Damron

This story will soon be everywhere - an HBO documentary is about to air and there are talks of a possible movie on the way. The Bad Blood audiobook is the best way to discover the truth behind the collapse of the multi-billion health technology startup, Theranos. Not only is this investigative journalism at its finest, but an utterly fascinating story. Narrated by Will Damron – winner of a coveted Audiobook Audie Award - Bad Blood takes a close look at the rise and fall of Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes. Once a pioneer of medical technology - backed by reputable giants of the business world – Theranos left many people disappointed and dumbfounded amid reports of fraud.

In 2015 a front-page expose was published by Wall Street journalist John Carreyrou. He goes further into detail in his book, and with Bad Blood’s audio version it’s less like listening to a story and more like being present at the heart of the investigation.

For the Flight

Alan Partridge: Nomad

Narrated by Alan Partridge

Probably the funniest travel book you’ll ever read (or listen to). Narrated by English actor Steve Coogan, but as his fictional alter-ego Alan Partridge, this epitome of British humour will have everyone in stitches. In his hilarious faux-memoir, the inept TV and radio presenter takes us on his own personal walking tour with only one rule: absolutely no unlicensed mini cabs. From life lessons to outdoor apparel advice, Partridge imparts some of his most poignant wisdom (from which we can all benefit).

While these audiobooks are some of our favourites, this is just the tip of the iceberg. With a whole world of literature to discover through your headphones, you might never need to turn a page again.
